WHY JESUS COULD NOT HAVED MARRIED

Writer's picture: Daryl E. SellDaryl E. Sell

Back in the 1970's a book and then later a movie came out titled "Jesus Christ Superstar' Then around the turn of the century, 20th to 21st, another book and consequently another movie was produced, called The Da Vinci Code. In each of these, Jesus was cast as having married Mary Magdalene. Most truly born-again Christians reject that concept off hand. But Why? Is there something sinful about marriage?

Hebrews 13:4 says, "Marriage is honorable in all, and the bed is undefiled". In Genesis 1:28 we find that God blessed marriage. The first commandment God gave to Adam and Eve was, "Be fruitful and multiply and replenish the earth." That meant for them to have sexual intercourse, and thus have children. I believe replenish means when the old die off, younger generations continue to replace those who have gone before. As we read through the Bible, we find that God does put one restriction. That is this is to be done through the union of man and woman joined together in holy matrimony.

Since this is so, then why could not Jesus have married Mary Magdalene? Was it because of her past? Many theologians believe that before Jesus cast the seven demons from her, she was probably a prostitute. So what? When he cast the demons from her, she undoubtedly got saved. I John 1:7 says that the Blood of Jesus Christ cleanseth us from all sin.

So then, why could not Jesus have married Mary Magdalene or any other woman? To answer that, we must dig much deeper into the Word of God. We must deal with the doctrine of original sin and how it is transmitted to mankind through all generations. some sects, cults, and denominations teach that Adam and Eve,

in their first act of sexual intercourse, was the original sin. This is ridiculous and impossible. In James 1:13 we are told that God cannot so much as tempt man to evil, much less command him/her to do so. So it is God who made man and woman and thus commands them to bring forth children. He knows how it is done.

Now we must start with the deity of our Lord Jesus Christ, the God-man both the Son of God and God the Son. This is extremely important, even imperative. Even though Eve sinned first, the apostle Paul said Eve was beguiled by the serpent (II Corinthians 11:3). This means she was tricked. On the other hand, the blame for the original sin, which was disobedience in Genesis 3, was placed upon Adam for his deliberate act.(Romans 5:12) thus was progenerated to each generation by the male parent. This doctrine is called traducianism also known as the seminal theory. There are some denominations that teach that every time a woman conceives God creates a new soul and that Adam only represents mankind in sin. This does not conform to Scripture. God completed His creation on the sixth day of creation. He is not creating anything anymore.

We were all in seed form in Adam, thus we sinned in him. Hebrews 7:9 says that Levi paid tithes to Melchisedec in Abraham. Abraham was Levi's great-grandfather and Levi was not yet born at the time of Abraham's paying tithes to Melchizedek.

This brings us to the necessity of Jesus being born of a virgin. For if Joseph or any other man had been the father of Jesus, he would have been born with a sin nature just like you and I have. He would not have been able to pay for his own sin, much less the sins of all mankind.

Now, how does this relate to his not marrying? You see, had Jesus married and produced children, as normal marriages do, His progeny would not have any sin nature, for He would have no sin to pass on. By now, in this 21st century, we would have a whole race of people with no sin nature. Frankly, I haven't run across any of those folks. That would have destroyed God's whole plan of salvation and redemption.

Satan has been attacking the Deity of Jesus Christ throughout history, as was the case in Jesus Christ Superstar and the Divinci Code. So is the case of all modern translations from the corrupted Alexandrian manuscripts that were lost for fifteen hundred years. All those translations in any language play down and even deny the Deity of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Christian BEWARE
