Bad Odds

Writer's picture: Daryl E. SellDaryl E. Sell

Back in the latter part of the last century a scientist/mathematician, with the help of calculators and computers available at that time, concluded that the mathematical probabilities of this universe coming into existence through any form of evolution was 1 over 10 to the 342nd power. That would be a fraction of 1/10 with 342 zeroes to follow.

The analogy would be that of an unabridged dictionary being the product of an explosion in a print shop. So , you see, whether evolution or creation, one accepts the findings by faith. On one hand a person's faith is placed on absolutely pure chance, and on the other one an absolutely powerful Creator.

Mathematical probabilities is a science in itself. Several businesses/industries are based solely on that. The gambling industry is based completely on that. The odds are always favorably for the house. Mike Rosen, a local Denver radio celebrity states, "The state lottery is a tax on people who are bad at math."

Also, the locking industry is based on mathematical probabilities, whether key or combination. PINs for credit/debit cards, codes for computers, and a host of other businesses are also based on the same thing. Consider the vast contrast between a simple 4 digit code and a fraction of 1/10-342p.

The reason mankind is so willing to place his/her faith in such a fanciful chance is: Once he/she admits to creation, he/she knows there is a Creator to whom he/she is responsible. He/she wants to be his/her own god. (Genesis 3:1-5 KJV-1611)
